Since the dawn of the vedic era, the institution of marriage is considered as sacred and it has religious sacrament. Marriage confers on the couple equal responsibility in respect of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha which form the essence of human life. Dharma implies good conduct performing the various karmas prescribed in religious texts. Wife’s participation and co-operation is must for performing any ritual. Artha refers simply to acquisition of material wellbeing through honest efforts. Kama implies enjoyment of sexual and other worldly pleasures while Moksha implies the ultimate salvation. So, marriage is a sacred ritual which confers on the married couple a legal and dignified status in society and the right of upholding the Garhasthya Dharma as husband and wife and fulfil the worldly obligations including begetting children.
Family is the fundamental unit of society. Every boy and girl expects a happy and healthy married life. A boy marries a girl with the firm belief that she will be an ideal wife and worthy partner making his married life full of bliss and happiness. In the same way, a girl joins a boy in wedlock with hope that he will prove to be an ideal husband supporting her with love and devotion throughout her life. If the hope and expectation of either of them is shattered, their life become miserable and hellish. So, utmost care should be taken in uniting a boy and girl in wedlock because in India, marriages are viewed as a sacred union of two souls to uphold Dharma.
