On this day, people remember and pay homage to their forefathers by performing their shradh and feeding poor people in their name. This is a 16 day period which starts from Purnima and ends on Amavasya during the Bhadrapada month.

The amavasya or the new Moon day of the Bhadrapada month is called Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya. On Sarva Pitru Amavasya, we perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals for the departed souls in the family.  

Members of a family also perform Shradh ritual collectively for pacification of the deceased souls. 

It is advised to perform Shradh and Tarpan under the guidance of a qualified priest at recommended holy places such as Gaya, Kashi and others. However, we may perform the rituals of paying obligation to the departed souls at our place as well.

The eldest male member of the family performs shradh.

It is prohibited to use utensils made of plastic, glass, steel or iron and the utensils of clay or leaves should be used. 

Brahmins should be invited and the person should offer them food and dakshina.

Then the member performing shradh should wash the feet of the Brahmins and make them sit at a sacred place.

It is considered auspicious to sprinkle sesame seeds on the priests. 

Then they offer lamp, incense, flowers, sandalwood, a mixture of barley flour and black sesame and water, sweets, fruits etc.
