In Hinduism, Shradh also known as pitru Paksha, is a special time dedicated to honoring and remembering ancestors. During this period, rituals are performed to seek peace for the souls of departed family members. It is believed that pitra paksha begins on Bhadrapada Purnima Tithi. On this day Shradh is performed in honor of those ancestors who died on the full moon day of the month. It is believed that during pitru paksha the souls of ancestors come to earth and are most receptive to offerings and prayers. Performing the Shradh 2024 of ancestors during this time can also get rid of pitra dosh prevailing in the birth horoscope.
According to Hindu Panchang pitru paksha is starting on September 17, but Shradh will not perform on this day. 17 September Tuesday is the Shradh of Bhadrapad Purnima and in pitru paksha, Shradh rituals are performed from pratipada date. Therefore Tarpan will be conducted in the name of sages on 17 September. Actually, Shradh Paksha starts from Patipada date.
What is Shradh?:
Shradh is a ritual meant to show respect to deceased family members like parents and grandparents. Hindus believe these ceremonies help the souls of the departed find peace in the afterlife. Shradh rituals are usually performed during the pitru paksha 15 day period in September or October.
The best time to perform Shradh:
According to the scriptures, worshiping the gods and goddesses in the morning and evening is considered auspicious during Pitru Paksha. Also, the afternoon is the time for worshiping ancestors. The best time for worshiping ancestors is said to be between 11:30 and 12:30. Therefore you should perform Shradh rituals only after checking Abhijeet Muhurta in the panchangam.
