Why is Mahashivratri Celebrated?
When Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga:
According to the scriptures, Lord Shiva appeared for the first time on the day of Mahashivratri. He came in the form of a huge pillar of fire (Jyotirlinga), which had no beginning and no end. Lord Brahma and Vishnu tried to understand it, but they failed. Then Shiva said that he was the master of this infinite power. Therefore, this day is celebrated in the joy of his appearance.

The main ones among them are _somnath, Kedarnath, Kashi Vishwanath, and Mahakaleshwar. On this day, a huge crowd of devotees gathers at these Jyotirlingas, and special worship is performed.
Samudra Manthan:

Marriage of Shiva and Parvati:
According to another story, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on the day of Mahashivratri. Goddess Parvati had performed a rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with her devotion, lord Shiva married her on Krishna Chaturdashi of the month of Falgun. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as the union of Shiva and Shakti.
Another Famous Story of Mahashivratri:
According to a legend a man who was a great devotee of Shiva once went to the forest to cut wood and got lost. It was very late and he could not find his way home. Since he had gone deep into the forest, he climbed a tree out of fear of animals. But he was afraid that if he fell asleep he would fall from the trees and animals would eat him.
So to stay awake, he kept plucking leaves and dropping them on the Shiv Linga while chanting the name of Lord Shiva. When it was morning, he saw that he had plucked a thousand leaves and dropped them on the Shiv Linga during the night, and the tree whose leaves he was plucking was a Bel tree.
