Understanding Amavasya and its significance

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the festival of Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the Tithi or the New Moon day. Amavasya is celebrated as an extremely auspicious occasion to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, good fortune, and prosperity. Hindu scriptures such as Puranas and Shastras emphasize that performing Lakshmi puja during Amavasya brings the divine grace of the Goddess to homes and blesses devotees with material and spiritual prosperity.

In 2024 Amavasya will begin at 3:53 pm on October 31st and last until 6:17 pm on November 1st. this time frame creates an overlap between two consecutive days, leading to confusion about which day is more auspicious for Lakshmi puja.

Diwali date and puja muhurat

Diwali is the major festival celebrated in Hinduism. On this day Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped and after that, the whole house is decorated with lamps. On October 31st,2024, Chturdashi Tithi will be there at sunrise, after which Amavasya Tithi will start at 03:52 pm which will end on November 1 at 06:16 pm. The festival of Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya and Amavasya will be there on both 31st and 1st November. The best astrologers say that if Amavasya touches Pradosh on both days then Lakshmi puja should be done on the second day itself. What time will Lakshmi puja happen?

Chhoti Diwali Narak Chturdashi or Roop Chturdashi should be worshipped on 31st October. The auspicious time will be from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. On the other hand, Deepawali should be worshipped on 1st November. The auspicious time for Lakshmi puja on this day will be from 6:22 pm to 8:19 pm. The auspicious time will be from 8:19 pm to 10:33 pm.

How to worship Lakshmi puja

First of all clean the place where you want to worship. After this make a square with flour and then place a stool there. Speared a clean red cloth on the chowki. Decorate the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and lord Ganesha on it with clothes and ornaments and install them. 

First place Lord Ganesha and seat goddess Lakshmi on his right side. Sit on the aasana and sprinkle Ganga jal around you. After this light a lamp in front of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. Offer them roli, Akshat (rice), fruits, flowers, sweets, coriander seeds, white and yellow kodi, Janeu (white thread for Lord Ganesha), lotus flower for Goddess Laxmi, and Durwa for Lord Ganesha. 

After this chant the mantras of Lakshmi Maa and lord Gnesha. Then perform aarti together with the whole family. After this blow the conch. Then light seven ghee diyas and place them in the temple, the puja room of the house, where grains are kept, near the water tank, near the Tulsi plant, near the Locker, and in the kitchen. After this light the remaining diyas and decorate the whole house.
