What is Devshayani Ekadashi?
The Ekadashi that occurs in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashada is called the Devshayani Ekadashi.
Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the 24 Ekadashis that occur in a year. Hindu Devotees, especially those who belong to the Vaishnava denomination, observe a vrat (fast) on every Ekadashi to propitiate Lord Vishnu. Devshayani Ekadashi is also known as Padma Ekadashi,

Significance of Devshayani Ekadashi
The Devshayani Ekadashi is very important as it marks the beginning of a significant 4 month period that spans across the next 4 months to come. As per the Holy Hindu Scriptures. Lord Vishnu on this day goes into a 4 month long period of Yogic Sleep called “Yog Nidra”.
The 4 month long period that starts from Devshayani Ekadashi is called the ‘Chaturmas’ and since Lord Vishnu who preserves the entire cosmos goes into Yog Nidra, no major auspicious task or event is performed during this time.
However, the Chaturmas is a time for immersing into devotion and receiving spiritual knowledge through listening to people on the spiritual path and reading holy scriptures.
Story Associated with Devshayani Ekadashi
As per the Holy Hindu Texts, once there was a king called Mandhata who was very benevolent & compassionate towards the people that lived in his kingdom. There came a time in his rule that it did not rain for 3 years and the kingdom went into a state of drought. This caused extreme sorrow & distress among the people. In search for a solution to this problem from a spiritual master, the king wandered deep into far away forests and reached the ashram of Sage Angeera.
Sage Angeera asked King Mandhata the reason for his sorrow that was evident from his face & body language. King Mandhata replied and told the situation of drought that has gripped his kingdom and has become an existential threat to the lives of all living beings- people, animals and trees.
Hearing this, Sage Angeera in his divine wisdom, suggested the king to observe the vrat (fast) of Devshayani Ekadashi and appeal to all his people to do the same. As per the directions of Sage Angeera, King Mandhata along with all the people of his kingdom observed the vrat of Devshayani Ekadashi and soon the drought ended with ample rain leading to abundant grains and subsequent wealth in the lives of all.
