What is Shradh?

Shradh is also known as Pitru Paksha. Pitru Paksha is a 15 day’s lunar period which starts from Bhadrapada Purnima and ends at Ashwin Amavasya, which is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. In this period, Hindus pay special respect and honor to their ancestors publically, through food offerings. The story behind Shradh:

• According to the legend, when the warrior King Karna died during the Mahabharata War and his spirit ascended to heaven, he was offered meals of jewels and gold to eat instead of food. Realizing that he couldn’t sustain himself on these items, he addressed the mighty Lord of heaven, Indra, and asked him why he wasn’t being offered real food.
• At that time, Lord Indra told him that he always used to donate jewels and gold to the needy ones and he never donated food to his ancestors. Then Karna said that he didn’t know this and as a result, Lord Indra told him that he can go back to earth for a period of 15 days to alter his mistakes and donate food in the memory of his ancestors.

Significance of Pitru Paksha

• According to the Hindu religion, Shradh is considered as an auspicious time to perform the ritual of Tarpan (offering made to divine entities or the substance used in the offering itself). It is a way of remembering and paying honor and respect to the deceased ancestors.
