As per the Lunar calendar, Phalguna is the last month of the year and the Purnima Tithi (date) in the Shukla Paksha (waxing period of the Moon) of this month i.e. The Phalguna Purnima, is the last day of the year.

Purnima means Full Moon and it holds a huge cosmic & spiritual significance. The Muhurat (time period) of Phalguna Purnima is considered as an incredibly auspicious time to start a new venture.

However, one must keep in mind that the auspicious time period to conduct rituals or go for new beginnings will be on 7th March as the ‘Uday Tithi’ (rising date) is occurring on the 7th March.

Phalguna Purnima 2023: Katha & Significance

As per the ancient Hindu scriptures, during the event of ‘Samudra Manthan’ or the Churning of the Cosmic Ocean, various articles & personalities came out of the waters and Goddess Laxmi was one amongst them.

She soon chose Lord Vishnu as Her Husband and it was Phalguna Purnima when all of this took place. Therefore, Hindus observe Vrat or fast on this day and pray for the blessings of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Vishnu.

Since Goddess Laxmi appeared from the ocean on this day, Phalguna Purnima is also celebrated as Laxmi Jayanti or the birthday of Goddess Laxmi.

Goddess Laxmi blesses Her devotees with abundant wealth, luxuries and opulence and so does Lord Vishnu. Therefore, by observing fast & performing puja rituals for both Goddess Laxmi and Lord Vishnu on Phalguna Purnima, one leads a joyful & prosperous life.

  • Bathe by including some Holy Ganga Jal and take a ‘Vrat Sankalp’ or resolve for observing a fast.
