The nine days of complete devotion and faith as celebrated with great vigor throughout the country are called Navratri. The Navratri 2022 is a highly religious festival which is observed by Hindus in robust numbers around the world. Know about the auspicious dates, colors and rituals of Navratri 2022 with this write up. The devotees keep fasts and perform Navratri puja for these constant 9 days. 

There is a ritual of worshipping 9 incarnations of Goddess Durga in these consecutive 9 days. Each day is dedicated to one form of Goddess Durga. These are - Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandmata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Maha Gauri, and Siddhidatri Goddesses.

In our ancient scriptures, Goddess Durga is revered as a form of Shakti or power. She is known to protect the world from negative energies and unwanted elements. She is known to remove miseries and troubles in her devotees’ lives.

She is called the mother who takes care of her children and gives them protection against adversities in life. Often depicted as riding a lion she resembles the fierce and humongous energy and power. During Navratri, the worshippers ask for her blessings. 

It is interesting to know that Navratri is celebrated 4 times a year. During Winters ( Magha), Spring (Chaitra) , Monsoon (Ashadha) and Autumn (Sharad) season. Now, in September 2022, Shardiya navratri are approaching. Different types of religious and cultural programs are organized by devotees throughout the country.

Shardiya Navratri 2022: Date and Timings 

The navratris that fall in the month of September-October are known as Shardiya Navratri. They fall in the autumn season or sharad ritu and that is the reason they got the name Shardiya navratri. They are also known by the name of Maha Navratri.

They usually fall in the lunar month of Ashwin during September or October. According to the Hindu panchang, Shardiya Navratri starts from the Pratipada in the shukla paksha (waxing Moon) of Ashwin month and ends on the ninth day of the same month. In the year 2022, Navratri will start from September 26, Monday and will last till October 5, Wednesday. 

The devotees visit the Shakti Peethas, which are the sacred places for worship of Goddess Durga and her nine forms across the country.

What is the significance of Navratri 2022? 

Navratri festival as has been mentioned is a festival observed in reverence of Goddess Durga. The festival is celebrated with great vigor in the northern part of the country especially Gujarat and West Bengal.

During 9 days of Navratri, the worshippers of Goddess Durga observe fasts and follow other religious austerities to seek her blessings. It is considered prohibited to consume liquor, non veg. food, onions, garlic, etc. during these 9 holy days.

After observing certain restrictions and traditions for nine days, people break their fast on the tenth day. The tenth day of Navratri is popularly called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra.

Legend related to Navratri 2022

It is believed that Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga for these 9 days and asked for strength and power. Goddess Durga blessed him with a boon of victory and then on the tenth day, he killed the demon Ravana. It was the day of Vijaydashmi when Lord Rama conquered Lanka and safeguarded Goddess Sita after killing Ravana. Not just in India,

Navratri is widely celebrated across the globe. Goddess Durga is worshipped for nine days. People perform Ghatasthapana and sing bhajans in appraisal of the Goddess. The nine forms are worshipped with strong devotion and faith. 

Kanjak – Date, Ritual and Significance 

During the ashtmi or navmi tithi of the navratri, people follow kanjak. This is a mandatory ritual and is performed by every devotee observing navratras. 

Ashtmi kanjak- 3rd October 2022, Monday

Navami kanjak – 4th October 2022, Tuesday 

On the day of kanjak, the devotees invite small 9 girls in their home. These are considered nau devi or the nine forms of Goddess Durga. They are fed halwa, chana and poori with extreme devotion and love. There is also a ritual to feed one boy who depicts Batuk Bhairav amongst these 9 girls. People also perform Batuk Bhairav puja during these auspicious 9 days. After serving them, the little girls receive goodies and are bid good bye. The devotees touch their feet to get their blessings. 

Shardiya Navratri 2022- The vehicle (vahana) of Goddess Durga

Every year Godedss Durga is believed to come on different vahana or vehicle on the Earth during navratras. In the Shardiya Navratri of the year 2022, the Goddess will arrive on the earth riding an elephant. Since the navratri is starting from Monday, the vehicle for that day is elephant. The elephant is considered highly auspicious in many ways. As per Hindu beliefs, Goddess Durga descends on Earth riding different vehicles and departs on different ones.

In ancient scriptures, each vehicle as used by Goddess Durga holds a unique significance. As per shastras, if Navratri begins from Monday or Sunday, the Goddess will come riding an elephant. If it happens to be Saturday or Tuesday then she will be riding a horse. If Navratri starts on Thursday or Friday then the goddess will descend in doli and if it begins on Wednesday, she will be coming in a boat.

For her departure, she uses Buffalo if leaving the Earth on Sunday or Monday. She will leave the Earth on a rooster if the day ends on Saturday or Tuesday. If it ends on Wednesday or Friday, the Goddess will leave on an elephant. Human ride is narrated for her departure on Thursday.

Navratri auspicious colors 2022

People wear 9 auspicious colors belonging to nine days of Navratri festival. These are the different colors as prescribed for 9 forms of Goddess Durga during worship. The auspicious colors are believed to bring prosperity, luck and wealth for the females of the house especially if they wear the prescribed colors for these 9 days. The same color clothes and accessories are known to bring prosperity and marital bliss for the married females. Especially women in Gujarat and Maharashtra follow it with full devotion. 

Ghatasthapana/Pratipada, Day 1

Navratri color of the day - White

The pratipada falls on Monday this year and thus wearing white colored clothes will attract good luck and prosperity for the worshippers. This is the day of the Goddess Shailputri and soak into devotion at the initiation of these auspicious 9 days. Celebrate the first Navratri day keeping spirits high and cheerful. The white color is known to uplift your mood and emotions as it will strengthen your Moon in the birth chart.

Dwitiya, Day 2 - September 27, (Tuesday)

Navratri color of the day - Red

The Dwitiya or second day is devoted to the Goddess Brahmacharni. It is advise to wear red color attire on this day. The color will pacify Mars in the horoscope and any ill-effects will be removed. This color is known to bring marital bliss while keeping positivity and enthusiasm inside the person. The color will evoke the blessings of spiritual knowledge, growth, fertility, peace and serenity within the devotee.

Tritiya, Day 3 - September 28, (Wednesday)

Navratri color of the day – Royal Blue

The auspicious color to be worn is royal blue on the third day of Navratri. The day is dedicated to Mata Chandraghanta, who carries half-moon on her forehead to represent emotional balance within the person. Blue color pacifies the planet Saturn in the birth chart and removes miseries in life.

Chaturthi, Day 4 - September 29, (Thursday)

Navratri color of the day- Yellow

Wear yellow clothes to please Devi Kushmanda on this day. The yellow color will strengthen Jupiter and helps in attracting luck and abundance in life. The Goddess will help in attaining the bliss of marriage and progeny. This is a color of wisdom which is the greatest gain in this world.

Navratri color of the day - Grey

The seventh day is dedicated to Godedss Kalratri. The suggested auspicious color for the ay is orange. The color will help to gain good results of the planet Sun while removing false pride and ego inside. The devotees should wear orange color to gain spiritual enhancement this day.

Ashtmi, Day 8 - October 3, (Monday)

Navratri color of the day- Peacock green

The eighth day is devoted to Goddess Maha Gauri. One should wear peacock green color this day. This color again helps in removing the bad effects of the malefic plants like Rahu in the birth chart. The Godedss blesses the devotees with clear thoughts and purpose in life. If one wears the color associated with the Goddess on the specific day, he/she is bound to attain her blessings and get happiness and growth in life.

Navratri color of the day- Pink

The last day i.e. the ninth day is dedicated to Goddess Siddhidatri and wearing pink color is considered auspicious on this day. So, it invokes right energy within the devotee to maintain a balance between malefic and benefic forces in the birth chart.
