Origin of the Name Bhairava

While the literal meaning of Bhairava is "terrible" or "fearful", the practical implementation is quite different. Bhairava means the one who protects his devotees from external as well as internal enemies, e.g. negative emotions like anger, pride, greed and lust etc. 

There is yet another narration which states "Bha" stands to create, "Ra" to preserve and "Va" to destruct. Bhairava, thus, is believed to combine all these qualities of trinity.

Legend behind incarnation of Kaal Bhairava

Kalbhairav is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The creation of Bhairava can be traced back to Shiv Mahapurana, where Vishnu asked Brahma who is the supreme creator of the Universe.

Brahma in arrogance boasted about his supremacy as he has created the universe. He asked Lord Vishnu to worship him. At this, a disagreement occurred between them. Brahma under extreme arrogance considered himself even superior than Lord Shiva for having 5 heads just like him. This further filled him with much arrogance and he started interfering with the tasks of Lord Shiva as well. Lord Shiva represented a large Agnilinga where both Brahma and Vishnu tried to see the ends of linga at the top and bottom respectively. But either of them couldn’t reach the end of Shiva linga.

At this, Lord Brahma told a lie that he saw the end while Lord Vishnu accepted his failure humbly. At that time, Lord Shiva interrupted Lord Brahma for saying a lie but Brahma started insulting Lord Shiva.

Then under fury, Lord Shiva threw a small nail from His finger, which took the form of Kala Bhairava, who cut the fifth head of Brahma. At this, Lord Brahma recognized his mistake, and apologized for being arrogant and nasty. Lord Brahma then regained his wisdom and left his pride and ego. 

Lord Shiva told that "Ones knowledge will not be glorified until he has pride and ego. One who is free from pride and ego will only get closer to divinity.
