Why do we do Holika Dahan, the symbol of evil? The historical importance of Holi
This festival is mainly related to the child, Prahlad. Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, but he was born in a family whose head was cruel and ruthless. Prahlad’s father, the ruthless Hiranyakashyap, considered himself God and expected the same from his subjects that they too should worship him and accept him as God.
Those who did not do so were either killed or put in prison. When Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahlad turned out to be a Vishnu devotee, the ruthless man first threatened him and in many ways pressured him to worship him instead of Vishnu. But Prahlad had unwavering faith in Lord Vishnu and he continued to worship him without getting distracted. When Prahlad did not agree even after all the efforts, Hiranyakashyap thought of killing him. He also tried many methods for this, but he did not die. Finally, Hiranyakashyap called his sister Holika, who had the boon of not getting burnt in fire, and made a plan to kill Prahlad. One day the cruel Hiranyakashyap got a pile of wood made and set it on fire.
When all the wood started burning with great speed, the king ordered his sister to take Prahlad and sit among the burning wood. Holika did the same. By chance Prahlad was saved, but Holika was burnt to ashes despite being blessed with a boon. Since then this festival has been celebrated in memory of Prahlad’s devotion and demonic demoness Holika.
