The 4th day of Navratri is associated with worshipping Maa Kushmanda. During this Vasant or Chaitra Navratri, the 4th day will be celebrated on 12th April 2024.

Who is Maa Kushmanda?

Maa Kushmanda is an 'Avatar' or incarnation of 'Adi Shakti' (The Supreme Primordial Goddess) who is the Creator of this Cosmos and is known as 'The Smiling Goddess'.

It must be noted that this form among the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Nav Durga) symbolizes happy manifestation and happiness.

It is said that when there was no existence and darkness everywhere, Maa Kushmanda created the cosmos or the existence with Her smile!

She is the very source of light in this universe and resides in the core of the Sun, providing vital energy to all beings in existence and directing the Sun in that process. She therefore governs the Sun.

Maa Kushmanda after creating the cosmos also created the Three Supreme Goddesses, namely-

  • Maha Kali
  • Maha Lakshmi
  • Maha Saraswati

Goddess Maha Kali was created from the left eye, Goddess Maha Lakshmi was created from the centre eye and Goddess Maha Saraswati was created from the right eye of Maa Kushmanda.

From these three forms of Goddess thereafter; Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Shakti were created.

Brahma & Saraswati took the task of ' Expanding the Creation' by creating other living beings and their habitats.

Vishnu & Lakshmi took the task of 'Preserving the Creation'

Shiva & Shakti took the task of 'Ending the Creation' when a cycle gets complete.

Maa Kushmanda is known as the first being of the entire cosmos and very source of creation of existence.

Depiction of Maa Kushmanda

Maa Kushmanda is depicted as seated on a Lion and has eight hands which is why She is also called 'Ashtabhuji' (One with eight hands).

She has a Kamandal (Sacred Pot used in spiritual processes), Dhanush (Bow), Baan (Arrow) and Kamal (Lotus flower) in Her right hands.

While in Her left hands; She has Amrit Kalash (Pot of Nectar), Jap Mala (Rosary), Gada (Mace) and Chakra (divine discus).

Significance of Maa Kushmanda Worship
