What is Basant Panchami?

Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami is a festival which is celebrated by Hindus to worship Goddess Saraswati and welcome the spring season. Basant Panchami comes on the ‘Panchami Tithi’ (5th date) of the ‘Shukla Paksha’ (Waxing Phase of the Moon) in the month of ‘Magh’ as per the Hindu Lunar Calendar.

Who is Goddess Saraswati?

Goddess Saraswati is one of the 3 forms of the Feminine Divine and is the consort of Lord Brahma- the Creator. She helped Lord Brahma to create the universe and is the deity who blesses Her devotees with knowledge, wisdom, music, science, fine arts and artistic abilities.

Goddess Saraswati is depicted as sitting in a white attire on a big white lotus with a ‘Veena’ (traditional Indian music instrument) near Her. She is worshipped for having a successful & truly meaningful academic life.

Significance of Basant Panchami

• Traditionally, devotees make an idol of Goddess Saraswati out of clay and worship that idol in the puja and immerse that idol in a sacred/clean flowing water body.
• Make such an idol or simply have a picture or idol of Goddess Saraswati that you keep permanently in the puja altar in your house.
• Offer yellow coloured flowers to Goddess Saraswati since they are dear to Her.
• Light a lamp of ghee or oil along with incense.
• Now offer Roli, Chandan, Haldi, Kesar, Akshat and Sweets to the Goddess.
• If you are a student then place your books nearby and your musical instruments if you are a musician or in fact other articles or equipment (that you can) which are a part of your artistic endeavour.
• Bow down to Her with utmost devotion in your heart and seek Her blessings.
• Recite or listen to the prayer associated with Goddess Saraswati.
• Distribute the prasad in the form of sweets offered to the Goddess in your family and have it yourself as well.
